Sailing on
Thrapston Sailing Lake
Middle Nene Sailing Club is a friendly, family-oriented sailing club situated on Thrapston Sailing Lake, a stunning 150-acre former gravel pit in Northamptonshire.
We welcome sailors of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to experienced racers. Whether you want to learn to sail, enjoy some friendly racing, take on sailors on championship level or simply spend time on the water with family and friends, you'll find everything you need here.
Our club has been sailing on this lake since 1947, and we're proud of our rich history and strong community of sailing enthusiasts.
Club Facilities
Clubhouse
A welcoming clubhouse with licensed bar, galley serving hot and cold food, and comfortable lounge area with views over the lake.
Boat Storage
Secure boat storage with laid out berthing for more than 200 dinghies and marina-style moorings for keelboats.
Constant Water Level
An almost unique feature allowing you to board or disembark from fixed staging without getting wet feet!
Slipways & Beach
Multiple slipways and a beach launching area make getting on the water easy for all boat types.
Changing Rooms
Well equipped changing rooms with hot showers and lockers for your convenience.
Race Box
Purpose-built race box for running our extensive racing programme with excellent views of the course.
Club History
Over 75 years of sailing on this beautiful lake.
When sailing started here in 1949, the lake was about one third of its present size, and sailors had to contend with the occasional barge carrying gravel from the Aldwincle end to the works at Thrapston.
In 1992, following years of patient negotiations, the Sailing Club Members purchased the site along with some 182 acres of water and surrounding land - a major achievement that provides real benefits in controlling costs.
In 1996, a major project removed the gravel bank separating the two lakes, giving us about 140 acres of open, unrestricted water on which to sail today.
The club has grown in numbers and prestige, with Olympic, World and National Championships among the achievements of former and current members.
